Thrive Scholarship

The Thrive Scholarship is our annual award recognizing a high school senior or college student who demonstrates academic excellence, resilience, dedication to their educational goals, and commitment to the community.

Alat Majur
2024

Alat Majur studies Kinesiology at Avila University. She graduated from Winnetonka High School and was president of the African Student Union, a Member of the Muslim Student Association, and a Volunteer at North Kansas City Hospital. Alat said her experiences as a South Sudanese student have shaped her into someone confident, outspoken, and determined to create her path despite societal and cultural expectations.

Mercy Toma
2024

Mercy Toma studies nursing at the University of Missouri in Columbia. She graduated from North Kansas City High School and was a team captain, part of the women’s empowerment club, and a summer volunteer at Children’s Mercy. She also participated in the Black Student Union and Student Council District Diversity Council and received the International Baccalaureate Diploma, the highest diploma available in the district. Mercy said it was the doubts from her elders that helped her succeed. She plans to prove them wrong and receive her degree to give her parents the world.
